Production companies Lionsgate and Atomic Monster announced on Tuesday via their Instagram that a remake of ‘Blair Witch Project’ will be released on September 24, 2027.
This news comes 28 years after the release of the indie horror classic ‘Blair Witch Project’, regarded as one of the most commercially successful independent films ever made.
Although details of the plotline have not been revealed, Variety wrote that Lionsgate chair Adam Fogelson said the film will “reintroduce this horror classic for a new generation”.
Who is involved in the making of the reboot?
The original film’s creators Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick and Gregg Hale all return as executive producers of the new project.
Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, original cast members, will make appearances alongside new additions such as Michael Clear, Judson Scott and Steven Schneider.
YouTuber, now filmmaker, Dylan Clark has been tasked with reimagining the 1999 classic.
He is also rewriting the film’s script, initially conceptualised by screenwriter Chris Thomas Devlin.

How does the remake contribute to the film franchise?
A year after the original film, a sequel called ‘Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2’ was released by a different director who neglected the found footage aesthetic that made the original so popular.
In 2016, another director made the film ‘Blair Witch’ which ignored the events of ‘Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2’ and serves as an alternative sequel to the 1999 film.
Neither, however, could match the $250 million global box office earnings or 86% Rotten Tomatoes score of the 90s blockbuster.
The remake will instead be a reimagining of the original film which aims to bring a “new vision” to modern audiences, as confirmed by Variety quoting Fogelson.
Assuming that the reboot will follow the events of the original film, audiences can expect a movie about three student filmmakers who disappear in the woods after aiming to make a documentary about the fictional legend of the Blair Witch.
