George Clooney, his wife Amal Clooney and their eight-year-old twins officially became French citizens after Christmas day, following their 2021 purchase of a Provence estate in the country.

Citing a better life for his family away from the spotlight, Clooney sought France to escape Hollywood culture hoping to provide a more normal upbringing for his children.

The announcement was published by a French government journal, officiating the citizenship of the Clooney family.

Life away from the spotlight

Prior to their citizenship, the Clooneys had already bought a farm in France in 2021 when their twins were four years old, stating that it was a better life for Ella and Alexander.

“Yeah, we’re very lucky. […] A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it,” he told Esquire in a recent interview.

“But now, for them, it’s like – they’re not on their iPads, you know?

“I was worried about raising our kids in LA, in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life.

“France – they kind of don’t give a s**t about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids,” he said.

The film veteran also told the Guardian that in France, “they don’t take photos of kids. There aren’t any paparazzi hidden at the school gates,” features that are important to him and his family.

A trend among some Hollywood stars

According to the LA Times, other celebs have expressed similar sentiments as Clooney, such as Johnny Depp who found refuge in France for himself and his children, Jack and Lily-Rose, until his separation from partner Vanessa Paradis in 2012.

The country “afforded [Depp] the possibility of living a normal life. Really a simple life,” the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor told SFGate in 2001.

US director Jim Jarmusch told France Inter radio on Friday that he also plans to apply for French citizenship.

“I would like a place that will allow me to escape from the United States,” he said, adding that he was also drawn to French culture.
