HBO has unveiled at New York City Comic Con a teaser for a new prequel series set in the Game of Thrones universe.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is an adaptation of the ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’ novellas by George R. R. Martin, particularly the first book, ‘The Hedge Knight.’ It is co-created by Martin and showrunner Ira Parker.

A new tale from Westeros

The series will revolve around “Dunk” or Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey), a “young, naive but courageous knight,” and “Egg” (Dexter Sol Ansell), his “diminutive squire” who will grow up to be King Aegon V Targaryen.

“Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends,” an official synopsis reads.

The trailer shows Dunk burying his liege Ser Arlan of Pennytree (Danny Webb) and assuming his belongings to become a wandering knight.

Dunk then gained Egg as a squire, accompanying him to Ashford and later joining a tourney with the help of Baelor Targaryan (Bertie Carvel).

He eventually gets into trouble with Baelor’s nephew, Prince Aerion (Finn Bennett), which leads to the main conflict of the series.

A Knight of Seven Kingdoms also stars Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, Sam Spruell as Maekar Targaryen, Shaun Thomas as Raymun Fossoway, Finn Bennett as Aerion Targaryen, Edward Ashley as Ser Steffon Fossoway, Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, and Henry Ashton as Daeron Targaryen.

The events of A Knight of Seven Kingdoms took place almost a hundred years before the events of the main series and around 72 years after House of the Dragon, another prequel centred around the civil war between the powerful Targaryen dynasty.

Story told from Dunk’s POV

Speaking at the Comic Con panel in New York, Martin and Parker emphasised that A Knight of Seven Kingdoms will have a different vibe than the other Game of Thrones series.

Earlier, Martin said in his blog that the new show will have a “much different tone,” but stressed that even though it is much lighter than the two series, “it’s still Westeros, so no one is truly safe.”

A grounded tone and simple storytelling

Showrunner Parker also emphasised that their “guiding light” was to follow Dunk “in terms of tone and point of view and the mud and the dirt.”

He also said that they wanted the audience to be immersed in the hedge knight’s point of view as one of the commoners in the Game of Thrones universe.

“It’s not the big, sprawling ‘Game of Thrones’ that we’ve come to know and love; it’s close and it’s hard,” Parker told Deadline.

The showrunner also told EW that they chose not to give A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms an elaborate title sequence because they want to “channel” every aspect of Dunk as a person.

“The title sequences on the original [Game of Thrones] and ‘House of the Dragon’ are big and epic and incredible.

Ramin Djawadi’s score is orchestral, large, and beautiful. That’s not really Dunk’s modus operandi. He’s plain and he’s simple and he’s to-the-point. He doesn’t have a lot of flash to him,” he added.
The six-episode A Knight of Seven Kingdoms will premiere on January 18, 2026.
