Football is mourning the loss of Liverpool’s Diogo Jota, who has tragically passed away at the age of 28 following a car accident in Spain.
Jota’s 26-year-old brother, Andre Silva, was also killed. He played for Penafiel in the second tier of Portuguese football.
The devastating news has sent shockwaves throughout the footballing world.
Just weeks ago, Jota had been celebrating a strong end to the 2024/25 season with Liverpool and an UEFA Nations League win with Portugal.
He also got married just two weeks ago.
His sudden passing marks a heartbreaking moment for his family, his team-mates, and all those who followed his career with admiration.
Club statement
In an official club statement, Liverpool FC said: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.
“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.
“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, team-mates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.
“We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

A career to be truly proud of
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and quickly cemented himself as a vital part of Jürgen Klopp’s squad.
He scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds, contributing heavily to their trophy-laden seasons, building a reputation as a big-game player.
With the Reds, he has won one Premier League, one FA Cup and two League Cups.
For Portugal, he made 49 senior appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists.
With his nation, Jota is a two-time Nations League winner.
A legacy left behind
Jota is survived by his wife, Rute, and their three children.
He leaves behind a legacy, not just of goals and trophies, but of quiet brilliance and unwavering professionalism – a man who, in his own way, gave everything he had to the game he loved.
