Asian rave enthusiasts are bracing themselves, as the world-renowned music festival Tomorrowland brings its magic to the region for the first time ever.

Once confined to being Belgium’s annual large-scale celebration of electronic dance music (EDM), Tomorrowland is now sharing its tune with another continent, making its mark as one of the best known international music spectacles.

For the first time since its foundation in 2005, Tomorrowland is heading to Asia, with a debut event in China this year, and a five-year annual run in Thailand beginning late next year.

Shanghai gets the first beat

Tomorrowland’s first spinoff in the region happens in Shanghai on November 22, featuring the festival’s trademarks – elaborate and immersive stage designs and a lineup of world-famous DJs.

Called “The Magic of Tomorrow,” the one-night event adopts the theme of “Paperworld,” which Tomorrowland introduced this year.

It will take place inside the city’s sophisticated Hero Dome, along the historical The Bund waterfront, according to Travel and Tour World newspaper.

Apart from being a landmark event in Asia, it will also be the first indoor Tomorrowland show anywhere in the world with a venue capable of accommodating 5,000 partygoers.

It will be held in partnership with Hero Esports, China’s biggest esports brand, together with beer company Budweiser China and entertainment complex INS Land.

In a statement in July, Tomorrowland said the Shanghai spinoff “marks a new chapter in the history of Tomorrowland, blending Tomorrowland’s global headliners and signature elements with the next wave of Chinese talent – reimagined through the lens of China and brought to life in one unforgettable show.”

Without spoiling the surprise, it said guests can expect “exclusive China performance from some of the world’s most celebrated DJs, a diverse lineup spanning genres and continents and a fully immersive indoor show, driven by cutting-edge visuals and sensory storytelling, designed specifically from the ground up to create intimacy, intensity and impact.”

Information on general ticket sales and artist lineup will be made available in September via Tomorrowland’s website and WeChat channels of its co-organisers.

Pattaya tuning in

From Shanghai, Tomorrowland will continue its Asian expansion in Thailand in December 2026, marking the beginning of the event’s five-year annual run in the country.

There is no official venue for the show yet, but the city of Pattaya in eastern Chon Buri Province has been identified as the leading candidate, specifically the Wisdom Valley in Khao Mai Kaeo area.

Situated about 150 kilometres from Bangkok, Pattaya is known for its bustling night life, lined with cabaret bars and clubs – a suitable pair for an EDM party.

The Thai Cabinet approved the decision to host Tomorrowland for five consecutive years in late July, as part of the government’s push to elevate the country’s global entertainment appeal.

It is expected that the event will generate more than THB12-billion (around US$370 million) in economic revenue and be a huge tourism boost for Thailand throughout its 2026-2030 saga.

The initiative is directly aligned with the country’s 2025 campaign called “Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism & Sports Year,” which aims to promote tourism through international music and performing arts culture.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has been designated as the lead agency responsible for co-ordinating the mega-event with Tomorrowland International (TLI) or its local joint venture, We Are One.World (Thailand) Company Limited, informs The Nation.

Official government data estimates that the Tomorrowland shows in the country could attract a total of 922,500 attendees, comprising 369,000 Thai residents and foreign nationals already in the country, alongside 553,500 international tourists.

It is reported that the concept of bringing Tomorrowland to Thailand was first explored between 2015 and 2019 but was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
