The New Zealand Defence Force is planning to send planes to Iran and Israel to assist any stranded Pacific Islanders returning home.
This was conveyed in a statement on Monday by New Zealand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) Winston Peters, as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.
“The government is already in discussions with commercial airlines to see what they could do to help, although it was uncertain when airspace would re-open,” an official told Radio New Zealand.
“We will play our part as a good international citizen, and where feasible, that may involve assisting other nationals including those from the Pacific Islands,” they added.
New Zealand joining others to co-ordinate operations
New Zealand has also been reaching out with partner countries to co-ordinate with other consular operations. This move includes a call for diplomacy and dialogue.
But for now, MFAT will provide SafeTravel advice on overland evacuation and border routes. This is to ensure that all who are rescued receive authorisation for crossing.

Due to the ongoing conflict the New Zealand Embassy in Tehran temporarily closed its doors on June 19.
“It is important to note that residents of the Cook Islands, Tokelau and Niue have the rights of New Zealand citizens.
“And if they are in Iran or Israel, they’re urged to follow the advice from MFAT to all New Zealanders, if it is safe to do so,” the official said.
US intervenes in Iran
The United States has also intervened militarily in Israel’s war on Iran, with US bombers reportedly destroying key nuclear sites, including Natanz, Isfahan and Fordo.
Iran accuses Israel and the US of crossing a “big red line.”
Meanwhile, US-affiliated South Pacific nations like the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) said they are monitoring the situation with US military partners.
“The Northern Marianas remain alert and we remain positively hopeful and confident that peace will reign for the benefit of our fellow brethren here at home and around the world,” CNMI Governor Arnold Palacios said.
