On Tuesday February 17th, also known as Shrove Tuesday, Brits across the country will take to their cookers to have a flipping good time for Pancake Day.

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, marking the final chance to feast before the Christian period of Lent begins.

It was traditionally considered the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast with pancakes being the perfect way to use up these ingredients.

Love affair for the ages

The UK’s love affair with pancakes dates back to 1439, according to history-uk.com and has featured in hundreds of cookery books over the years.

Brits have even gone so far as to create a pancake-based sport, with many pancake races taking place across the country each year.

The object of the race is to get to the finishing line first, carrying a frying pan with a cooked pancake in it and flipping the pancake as you run.

So the big question is, how do you top yours?

Classic

Lemon and sugar, with just a small hit of sweetness it’s the OG of the pancake toppings.

Syrups

Be it maple, golden or honey, syrups provide a very sweet and sticky topping for your pancake.

The crowd favourite

A combination of banana and chocolate spread is a winner for pancake fans of all ages and offers at least one of your 5-a-day to balance out the sugar feast.

The health conscious flipper

Those pancake fans who don’t want to indulge too much can try a combination of natural Greek yogurt with berries, seeds or nuts.

The savoury choice

For those people without a sweet tooth, a savoury topping of bacon and eggs, ham and cheese or salmon and cream cheese might hit the spot instead.

On your marks, get set, flip!
