It was a thrilling and controversial final matchday in the Premier League on Sunday as Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Nottingham Forest all vied for the three remaining Champions League places.

City, Chelsea, and Newcastle ended up securing Champions League football for next season, joining Liverpool, Arsenal, and Europa League winners Tottenham at Europe’s top table.

On the other hand, Villa could only qualify for the Europa League after losing at Manchester United in a game marred by a controversial refereeing decision.

FA winners Crystal Palace, meanwhile, will also appear in UEFA’s second-tier competition, while Forest are set to compete in the Conference League in 2025-26 thanks to their seventh-place finish.

Amorim acknowledges horror season

After the victory over Villa, Amorim addressed the Old Trafford crowd alongside his players and apologised for United’s historically poor campaign.

“First of all, I want to apologise for this season,” the Portuguese said. “I know you are very disappointed with me and with the team.

“Secondly, I want to say thank you. We are very grateful for your support over the season. I know it was very hard in many games.

“Now we have to make a choice. Do we get stuck in the past, because this season is in the past – it is over.

“We fight each other or we stick together and move forward.

“Six months ago, I said the storm is coming. Today, after this disaster season, I want to tell you that the good days are coming.

“If there is one club in the world that has proved in the past that they can overcome any situation or disaster, it is our club. It is Manchester United Football Club.

“Thank you very much – see you next season.”

The Red Devils have since confirmed the departures of Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans, and Victor Lindelöf to begin what is expected to be a much-needed squad overhaul.

And with no European football to look forward to next season, it is set to be yet another period of transition for the struggling English giants.

Emery positive despite Champions League heartbreak

Villa will compete in the Europa League next term after their loss in Manchester, with many fans and pundits blaming the referee after he denied the Villans an opening goal in the second half.

The 10-man visitors thought they had taken the lead when Morgan Rogers nicked the ball off Altay Bayindir in the box, but the midfielder was adjudged to have kicked the ball out of the United goalkeeper’s hands.

Replays showed that the decision was a mistake, however, and Villa went on to lose the game.

Emery has now lamented the official’s error but is nevertheless trying to remain optimistic.

“The TV [evidence] is clear but, of course, we have to accept it,” he said. “It is a big mistake.

“The goal [being] disallowed was the key moment, but overall they deserve it more. We were resilient with one player less and we could score one goal. It was a good opportunity to continue being resilient and keep the result.

“I speak to the referee and he knows it [was a mistake]. But I don’t want to speak about VAR.

“We go to Europa League but we were close to Champions League. Our objective [at the start of the season] was to be in Europe, and we have to be happy and proud with what we did.”
