Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has set his sights on defending the Premier League title next season but is also hungry for more Champions League glory.

Arne Slot steered the Merseyside club to title success in his first season as manager, but their Champions League challenge was ended by Paris Saint-Germain, who will take on Inter Milan in Munich on May 31 for the right to be crowned European kings.

In addition to earning a Premier League winner’s medal, Salah was voted Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association, having racked up 28 league goals and 18 assists in a standout season.

Salah wants more silverware

The 32-year-old, who has penned a new two-year contract at Anfield, is adamant that he does not want the Reds to rest on their laurels.

He told Sky Sports: “When I came into the season, it was like: ‘okay, will I be able to do it again?’ I had that conversation with myself. I said: ‘okay, let’s find out’.

“It was like: ‘okay, you need to work hard, to set the example,’ [so] I was doing my job and I think I did it very well.

“We have a very good group of players and a very good manager. We started the season well and now we won the Premier League.

“Hopefully we can win the Premier League again and also the Champions League.”

Mentality monster

Liverpool boss Slot has praised Salah’s mentality and feels he is a strong contender to win this season’s Ballon d’Or trophy.

The Dutchman faced a press conference ahead of Liverpool’s final Premier League game of the season against Crystal Palace on Sunday and was happy to discuss his talismanic forward.

Slot said: “He [Salah] had very, very, very good seasons at Liverpool, but this one probably stands out in terms of numbers and if you add to that we also won the league, that would probably give him a fair chance.

“But, fortunately for all the football fans around the world, he’s not the only player who has had a great season. We were able to watch many great football players this year.

“But if ever there was a chance for him, it would be this season. If not, then he’s going to try to push even harder next season – that’s what I know with him.

“Mo has proven he can always raise his game even further.

“That is the elite mentality star players should have – never be satisfied with where you are – and that’s the mentality he has.

“In terms of the team, we can do a bit better. We’ve played for four trophies and we’ve only won one – the hardest.”
