Your “outie” would probably be thrilled to know that production is finally underway for Season 3 of Apple TV’s hit sci-fi workplace thriller Severance.
Ben Stiller teased on Monday, July 27, the upcoming season in a vague X post quoting Kier Eagan, the founder of the sinister megacorporation Lumon Industries: “To return to work is to return home.”
The American director and producer’s now-viral post was accompanied by a red-tinted, blurred image of Adam Scott’s Mark S. and Britt Lower’s Helly R. running the halls of the Severed Floor in the twisty, nail-biting Season 2 finale.
It was shortly reposted by Apple TV’s official X account, urging fans to “frolic in moderation.”
Dan Erickson, the creative behind “Severance”, also announced the news on Instagram with the same photo and caption used by Stiller.
The Emmy Award-winning show follows employees of the Macrodata Refinement department at Lumon, a fictitious biotechnology company known for its life-altering surgical procedure called ‘Severance.’
Their work is so mysterious and important that they have agreed to have a chip implanted into their brains to separate their work selves (“innies”) from their personal lives (“outies”).
Basically, a severed employee’s innie and outie are entirely two different people even though they share one body.
New episodes coming ‘much sooner’ than you think
Neither Stiller nor Erickson disclosed any plot details or timeline for the junior season.
But in May, lead actor Scott hinted that new Severance episodes might come sooner than expected, while noting that the show’s quality still matters more than its turnaround time.
“We’re definitely planning on getting it out much sooner than the last round, which was three years, which is too long,” he said in an interview with Hollywood news site Deadline.
Season 3 will pick up with innie Mark fulfilling his promise to his outie to help Gemma escape the Testing Floor after completing the Cold Harbour macrodata file.
But, in a twist, Mark decides to stay behind at Lumon with Helly instead of going after Gemma.

Stiller-less season
In August 2025, it was revealed that Stiller won’t be returning as director this season due to scheduling conflicts, and will instead remain as executive producer.
The Night at the Museum actor then assured fans that he won’t be leaving Severance.
“It’s been full-time the last 8 months working on Season 3 and I’m not going anywhere. We have incredible directors and a team that creates the show,” he wrote at the time on X.
“I love directing it and look forward to at some point again for sure. I feel like season 3 is going to be the best yet as we continue to evolve.”

Fan frenzy
As soon as Monday’s news broke, fans rushed to social media to express their excitement for Season 3.
“Your outie is excited for Season 3,” one wrote under showrunner Erickson’s Instagram post.
“Take your time. Do the work you did that made the previous two seasons great but get us a Time Machine set to S3E1,” a second said.
“The innie in me is thrilled. The outie has questions,” another said.
On X, some fans appeared to be getting impatient with the long wait.
“You’ll post this and give us the third season like 5 years later,” one user said in reaction to Stiller’s announcement on the microblogging site.
“These long gaps between seasons are extremely annoying,” another commented.
