Sold for $9.12 million, a 1939 copy of “Superman No.1” comic has broken the previous record held by “Action Comics No.1.”
The historic copy was found by three brothers, who requested to stay anonymous, after cleaning their late mother’s attic in California, according to Heritage Auctions.

Along with the “Superman No.1” copy, the brothers, in their 50s and 60s, also found five other comic books.
It took the brothers several months to get in touch with the Heritage Auctions.
According to Lon Allen, vice-president of Heritage Auctions, the brothers’ mother often told them that she has an expensive collection of comic books, but she never showed them.
The auction house stated that the 1939 copy of the first edition of Superman’s adventures was “in pristine condition,” given a rating of 9.0 out of 10 by CGC, the world’s largest third-party comics grading service.
Only seven copies with a CGC grade of 6.0 or above are known to exist, including the record-holding copy.
“Superman No. 1 is a milestone in pop culture history, and this copy is not only in unprecedented condition, but it has a movie-worthy story behind it,” Allen said.
“I was glad to see the price reflect that and am honoured Heritage was entrusted with this iconic book.”
According to Jim Halperin, co-founder of Heritage Auctions, the sale may eventually be remembered as a precursor to popular culture collecting’s rise to the top of the auction industry.
“The value and historical importance of these objects are becoming even more well-known to collectors all over the world,” Halperin said.

This copy of “Superman No.1,” auctioned at $9.12 million, surpassed the previous highest-priced comic book ever sold by $3 million.
The comic reportedly was originally sold for 10 Cents when it was first distributed commercially.
“Action Comics No. 1,” which debuted the Man of Steel, held the previous record; it was sold for $6 million in 2024.
In 2022, another copy of “Superman No.1” held the record after selling for $5.3 million.
Meanwhile, in 2021, a copy of “Amazing Fantasy No.15,” which featured Spider-Man for the first time, held the record at $3.6 million.
Even though “Superman No.1” had several print runs of 500,000 copies, 250,000 copies, and 150,000 copies, intact copies are now uncommon because the comic encouraged young readers to cut out the cover and use it as a poster.
