Pope Leo XIV issued a strong global appeal for peace on Easter Sunday, urging political leaders to end ongoing wars and abandon the pursuit of power through violence in what has become a defining message of his early papacy.

Delivering his first Easter Urbi et Orbi blessing from Saint Peter’s Basilica, the pontiff called on those with authority and weapons to halt conflict and seek dialogue.

“Let those who have weapons lay them down,” he said, as quoted by CBC News, emphasising that leaders must “choose peace” over domination and destruction.

Pope warns against violence

Speaking before thousands gathered in Saint Peter’s Square and millions watching worldwide, Pope Leo warned that humanity risks becoming desensitised to war.

He lamented that people are “growing accustomed to violence” and increasingly indifferent to human suffering, a trend he described as deeply dangerous for global stability.

The Easter message comes amid multiple ongoing conflicts, including heightened tensions in the Middle East and war in Ukraine.

While the pope avoided naming specific countries during the formal blessing, he acknowledged the widespread pain caused by violence and underscored the urgent need for diplomatic solutions.

Pope Leo framed his appeal within the spiritual significance of Easter, highlighting hope, renewal and the triumph of life over death.

He stressed that true strength lies not in military power but in reconciliation, dialogue and compassion – values he said must guide global leadership.

Global prayer vigil planned

In addition to his message, the Vatican announced plans for a global prayer vigil for peace, signalling continued efforts to mobilise both spiritual and diplomatic support for ending conflicts worldwide.

Observers note that Pope Leo, the first United States–born pontiff, is quickly establishing himself as a clear moral voice on the world stage.

His Easter appeal reinforces the Catholic Church’s long-standing position against war while directly challenging leaders to act decisively in pursuit of peace.
