It is raining pastel and all things cute for virtual K-pop group PLAVE after teaming up with Sanrio for their newest single album, PLBBUU.

The collaboration blends PLAVE’s experimental, digital boy-band charm with Sanrio’s endearing fluffiness – a first-time combination that has set a whole new level of “cuteness aggression” for fans of all ages worldwide.

A pastel storm of sound and sweetness

Dropped on November 10 along with eye-fluttering pastel visuals and adorable plush-inspired merchandise, the album channels a playful sweetness – a concept uncommonly promoted in K-pop’s high-energy digital sphere.

The latest release came with three songs: “BBUU!”, “Hide and Seek” and “Bongsoong-a”, according to a related report from The Korea Times.

“BBUU!” is the title track built around the Korean onomatopoeia for when making a kissing sound or puckering one’s lips.

The song’s RnB genre radiates a bright and playful energy strengthened with a catchy counting-hook chorus intentionally made for its groovy choreography.

Meanwhile, B-side tracks “Hide and Seek” and “Bongsoong-a” let the minds of listeners explore the comfort and nostalgia that define Sanrio’s beloved characters.

PLAVE has allowed itself to become one with Sanrio for this comeback to form a world that feels safe, pure and effortlessly solace for anyone who seeks happiness amid grey clouds.

Furthermore, this partnership is more than just a marketing strategy but a manifestation of the group’s identity: human emotion depicted through virtual artistry.

Bridging the real and virtual worlds

Yejun, Noah, Bamby, Eunho and Hamin are the five members who sealed the band’s official debut under VLAST in March 2023.

Actual singers and dancers power PLAVE’s striking performances using motion-capture and real-time rendering technology – key factors VLAST maximises to separate the group from idols brought to life by artificial intelligence.

This gives them the opportunity to engage with fans in concerts and livestreams just like physical idols, while keeping things creatively flexible with their animated avatars.

Their debut was noted as more satisfying when PLAVE had been recognised as one of the most successful virtual groups in South Korea, thanks to their sold-out concerts, top-charting songs and a passionate fandom named “PLLI.”

Moreover, it was the smooth blend of emotional pop with EDM in their music that helped represent the genuineness of human performance within a vividly digital frame.

Where cuteness meets the future of K-Pop

By working together with Sanrio, PLAVE has found the right partner to broaden the stories centred in their universe.

From Cinnamoroll to Pompompurin, Sanrio’s characters embody the importance of building friendships and honing imagination, values that resonate with PLAVE’s goal to engage with fans through happiness and authenticity.

The PLBBUU project also unveils themed merchandise such as keychain plushies and personal photocards of the members and collectable art like stickers and drawings, and animated videos, expanding the album’s world beyond streaming platforms into the concrete realm of fandom culture.

Ultimately, PLBBUU is not just an album – it is a statement on the progressing advancements of K-pop and digital media.
