Millions have heard the voice of Xania Monet, but some fans were shocked to learn that she is a product of artificial intelligence (AI).

In what Billboard has described as a “potentially historic moment,” Xania Monet’s “How Was I Supposed to Know?” debuted at No.30 on the Adult R&B Airplay survey on November 1.

Billboard said that this is the first song by an AI-generated artist to appear on a Billboard radio airplay chart.

Social media sensation

The song first became viral on the social media platform TikTok.

It then rose to the top of Billboard’s R&B Digital Song Sales list in September and made its Top 20 debut on Hot R&B Songs.

Previously, Xania Monet secured a multi-million dollar record deal with Hallwood Media after “a bidding war,” as described by Billboard.

According to the music and entertainment magazine, there were other instances of AI and AI-assisted acts which have charted in the recent months, including Enlly Blue, Juno Skye, and Breaking Rust.

Xania Monet an ‘extension of me,’ says creator

Telisha “Nikki” Jones, a poet and composer from Mississippi, created Xania Monet, who uses Suno, an AI music-generating platform, to sing Jones’s poems set to R&B music.

Jones created the persona while teaching herself AI.

“Xania is an extension of me, so I look at her as a real person. I’m just taking what I love doing and mixing it with tech,” Jones stated in an interview.

Jones says she is not a singer, but claims that the “lyrics are 100% me” and that they originate from poems she wrote.

“I’m just taking what I love doing and mixing it with tech.”

“I just feel like AI … it’s the new era that we’re in. And I look at it as a tool, as an instrument, and utilise it,” she added.

Meanwhile, Romel Murphy, Xania Monet’s manager, says that the goal for now is to improve the artistic quality of the AI artist.

“We used AI as a tool, which is what it was created for. We used it to enhance our artistry.”

“We created real R&B music, music that was rooted in the truth – real lyrics, and her real life experiences and life lessons.”

“AI helped us bring the message to life and deliver it to the world. But the artistry and the message behind it is all human.”

“Her song is resonating with the masses. If you had a traditional artist, radio would still be a piece of the promotion strategy. We’re doing the same,” he added.
